Philip Douglas Smith – August 19, 1959 –
July 9, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Philip Smith
announce his passing on July 9, 2021 at the Health Science Center in
St. John’s after a courageous battle with
cancer.
Predeceased by his parents Douglas and Florence Smith,
step-father Lewis Drover, brother Leslie Drover, sister in laws Mary
Drover and Nina Drover.
He leaves to mourn his wife Elizabeth (Patterson), daughters
Nicole (John) and Megan (Stephen) and two precious grandchildren,
Sophia and Gabriella. Brothers Edward (Georgina), Wayne (Lois), Clyde
(Jean), sister Emmie (Paul), sister in law Marg, and numerous brother
and sister in laws, nieces and nephews.
Phil worked at Memorial University for 35 years and was
grateful to have retired at the young age of 55. He loved helping
others and was always there when his large extended family needed a
job done around the house or at the cabin in Gooseberry
Cove. He loved his two beautiful daughters and was proud to
have raised them as strong athletes and raced along side of them in
numerous Tely 10’s. He thoroughly enjoyed his few years of
retirement spending his time at the cabin in Gooseberry Cove with all
the Patterson family. Every family cabin owner could always count on
Phil for clean cabin windows and a hand with mowing the lawn. His
quick wit and humor made him an all-around "Dad" to so
many.
At Phil’s request cremation has taken place.
Visitation will take place on July 13 from 10 am - 2 pm at
Barrett’s Funeral Home in St. John’s. Funeral
service to follow at 2 pm in the Chapel. Burial will take place on
July 14 at Dermot McGettigan Memorial Cemetery, Placentia. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer
Center in St. John’s.
His family is extremely grateful for the support of the
oncology team at the Health Science Center for their dedicated time
and care as he courageously fought his battle with cancer. Never one
to complain, Phil thanked every Doctor and Nurse with sincerity until
his moments. May he rest in peace.
