Benedict Francis Careen

Passed peacefully away on September 13th, 2021, at Placentia Health Centre, Benedict Francis Careen at a wonderful age of 94.

Following a long rewarding life, Benedict leaves with enduring memories his wife, Ellen (Roche) of 67 years and their family, Diana (Buddy), Jane (Mike), Eugene (Cindy), Walter (Wanda), Gilbert (Kimmy),  Roy (Yvonne), Maureen (Calvin), Melvin (Marie), Barry (Dena), Gary (Vivian), Sylvia (Jamie), his grandchildren, Jason (Lisa), Charlene (Jason), Chantel (Darren), Melissa (Tony), Jenna (Steve), Ryan (Ashley), Lauren, Angelea (Aaron), Maggie, Noah, Christopher (Justina), Heather (Eric), Samantha (Anthony), Brandon (April), Miranda (Brad), Mitchell, Brooklyn, Rachel, Ben, Nikita (Carl), Scarlett, and David, his great grandchildren, Nathan, Claire, Brody, Cameron, Jaden, Jensen, Madden, Meyer, Owen, Finn, and Atlas.  He is predeceased by his grandchildren Hilary, Jake, and Gary whom he has joined in God’s Holy Kingdom.

Benedict was a man who made his living doing what he loved, fishing. His love of the sea was passed on to all his boys, who continue in his footsteps.  Benedict was ahead of his time, a very forward thinker who was always eager to keep up with the latest in technology, as was evident by his love for his iPad.  He was a Jack of all trades, as was seen not only in his success as a fisherman but also in his ability to fix anything.  He certainly did love the news and the gossip and made many trips to his good friend Willie Careen’s to find out what was on the go.  He enjoyed his chats and visits from special friends and family members: Howard Careen, Mike Careen, Eugene Manning, Ted & Elaine Furey, Patsy & Gordan Yetman, Jerry Fowler, and many more.

He will be remembered for his willingness to help his neighbours and friends in his younger years, his very sharp mind even in his final moments, and his great love of gadgets. I’m sure he and his best buddy, Foncy Careen, are having a great yarn up there now and he is enjoying a drink with good friend, Ricky Nash, as well.

Our family has been blessed with a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather for 94 years.  He was married to the love of his life, Nellie Careen, and together they raised a large family who continued to surround them for all of their lives. His memory will live in our hearts forever.  Our Skipper has made his final voyage.

Many thanks to the staff at Placentia Health Centre who were so kind during his last few days. Special thanks to Michelle Conway who was a Godsend to him.  Dad could be a little rough around the edges at times, however, Michelle handled him in her special way and for that we will be forever grateful.  As well, thanks to all the family members who gave Dad special care.  God bless you all.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Maher’s Funeral home, Placentia. He will be leaving Placentia at 1 o’clock Wednesday. Visitation to take place 3:30 to 9:00pm Wednesday and all-day Thursday; service at 7pm on Thursday.  Funeral Mass to take place on Friday, 2pm at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Point Lance.

Gone Fishing:

I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me,
So put me on a boat headed out to sea.
Please send along my fishing pole,
For I’ve been invited to the fishin’ hole.
Where every day is a day to fish,
To fill your heart with every wish.
Don’t worry, or feel sad for me,
I’m fishin’ with the Master of the sea.
We will miss each other for awhile,
But you will come and bring your smile.
It won’t be long you will see,
Till we’re together you and me.
To all of those that think of me,
Be happy as I go out to sea.
If others wonder, why I’m missin’
Just tell em I’ve gone fishin’
